DIY Yarn Pom-Pom Bookmarks
I recently bought these adorable mini skeins of yarn. Why? I wasn’t sure at the time. But they were small and cute and I didn’t have any yarn. I figured yarn is an essential part of the crafter’s tool-kit, so I went for it. I didn’t want this yarn just sitting in my drawers, so I went on a search for a yarn project (that wasn’t knitting). That’s when I stumbled upon pom-pom bookmarks, an idea inspired by FabDIY. Cute, useful, and easy to make, these bookmarks are the perfect craft for adults and teens alike.
Materials for Pom-Pom Bookmarks
- Yarn (my mini skeins of yarn are called Bon-Bons and they can be found here)
- Scissors
How to Make Pom-Pom Bookmarks
Wrap yarn around your fingers. The amount of fingers you use will determine the size of the pom-poms. I wrapped the yarn around 3 fingers to make this size bookmark.
Continue wrapping until 3/4 of the length of your fingers are covered in a 1/4 inch layer of yarn. Trim the end of the yarn.
Cut a 1/2 foot piece of yarn. Thread the yarn from the back of the pom-pom to the front, wrapping all the way around the wrapped yarn. Make a single knot with the yarn ends.
Slide all of the yarn off your fingers and tighten the single knot. Add another knot to make the single knot into a double knot. Make sure the knot is tight; this is what will make your pom-pom fluffy. If the first knot isn’t tight enough, feel free to add another knot with a small piece of yarn.
Cut the short end of the tying piece. Slide your scissors through the loops and cut the loops on both sides.
If you missed any loops with the first cut, go back and cut them.
Fluff the pieces of yarn to make the pom-pom more full. Trim the longer pieces so that the pom-pom strands are all the same length.
Use these cute bookmarks to mark your place in your favorite book!
Yes, I love Harry Potter.
Alternate version 1: If you want to make a pom-pom with two colors, wrap half the length of yarn with one color and half with the other.
Alternate version 2: If you’d just like a pom-pom, make the tying string length shorter and cut the ends of match with the rest of the pom-pom.
