Grandma’s Classic Stuffing (Dressing) Recipe
Within the past week I’ve made green bean casserole and stuffing. I think it’s safe to say that I’m looking forward to Thanksgiving food. While my green bean casserole recipe comes right off the box, this one comes right from grandma. I dislike box stuffing, but this homemade stuffing is my favorite dish at Thanksgiving. A little bit of sage adds the perfect touch to this delicious Thanksgiving side.
Ingredients for Homemade Stuffing
- 2 loaves of bread
- 1 cup of butter
- Approximately 24 ounces of chicken stock
- 2-3 stalks of celery
- 1 small onion (or half of one large onion)
How to Make Homemade Stuffing
Dice the onion and celery. How fine you dice them depends on your preference. I prefer small pieces, but others may like larger pieces.
Melt your butter in a large pan. Cook the onion and celery until the onions are translucent (you can see through them).
Add chicken stock and stir.
In a large pot or bowl, shred your loaves of bread into about 1″ pieces (it doesn’t have to be perfect).
Pour half of the chicken stock mixture over the bread.
Mix the chicken stock mixture with the bread. I use my hands for this. The bread should be moist, but not sopping. If it is too dry, add more of the chicken stock mixture. If it’s too wet, add more bread.
Once you’ve reached your desired consistency, add 3/4 teaspoon sage and salt and pepper to taste. Mix the seasonings in. (Side note: My dad and I both love eating raw stuffing before it’s been cooked.)
Transfer stuffing to a casserole dish or baking pan. Bake for 30 minutes or until the top is crispy.
Enjoy this delicious stuffing this Thanksgiving or as a side dish to your favorite meal!
